Alright, so I was on my cruddy laptop that was basically really low end because I can barely play certain games on it and I decided what the heck, lets see if "We Shall Wake" would work! So I was running into that launcher problem where it black screens and does the flashy full screen ding dong stuff. I thought meh whatever, I read the error log it popped out, it said something about my java stuff failing to work, but I knew my graphics were already up to its date from 2010 (lmfao low end) and it wasnt my java because i've played a different game that I had done so many fixes with java for. So that was out of the question.
Anyways, I was looking around and noticed you guys had the "preferences" file, my thoughts were that it was the options for graphics because I would try to find the options files for any games I play on this poop of a laptop. So then, I opened it with notepad and decided to lower abunch of things because thats how it ran other big games that I wont name but yeah. Messing around with the options, it finally fixed my launcher problem, it just dealt with lowering stuff because my laptop was poop and whoop whoop I got in past the blackscreen problem!
The main difficult part I had, was figuring out how to pass the tutorial after I clicked the "low" options for the game because it was laggy as hell in the tutorial. I dealt through all the lag and got to the first tutorial enemy where it showed something close to like "Oh hey did you know you can open the menu with TAB?" and previously I was sitting at the start of the tutorial wondering why is Esc only showing my cursor until I realized that was its point. But yeah, dealing through all the lag it was nice knowing what the menu key was finally. Getting to a different point, after many trials and errors with fixing the game, I got to these steps that worked for me. And I have some notes after my launcher fix that i'll explain.
My Launcher Blackscreen Problem: In "Preferences" I derped these options, I basically cut most options in half or it was already set from the "low" options
------------------------
fov = 45.0
fpsCapEnabled = false (you could leave it true, but it was what i needed to start up on my laptop)
flushGPUEachFrame = false (this is something about preloading other areas while your in the area your in, so i turned it false)
slowMotionEffectsEnabled = false (i felt like it would affect my game)
exposure = 0.5
saturation = 0.5
decalLife = 5.0
vignetteEnabled = false (i think this was false in the first place but idk just be sure)
textureResolution = 256 (when you first start you'll have to choose an option so i chose low and it places it to 512 which is what i cut in half after i got the settings saved)
highResTileDistance = 5.0 (it was 10 previously or 20 i think )
globalLodMultiplier = 0.5
grassRenderDistance = 0.0
grassAmountMultiplier = 0.2
shadowResolution = 256
shadowFiltering = false
distortion = false
motionBlur = false
bloom = false
superSampling = 0.5
ALSO: Depending on how your screen res and display works, you decide the FullscreenEnabled option and the width and height. My laptop personally crashes on display with windowed, but does fine with fullscreen and a resolution of 800x600. Although, I usually play other games with fullscreen 640x480 on it. I make it work lol
------------------------
Okay, so if someone is going to try what my options were, I'd like to know if you bypassed your blackscreen/launcher problem like that because thats how it worked for me. Then, I'd also like to say that once a person gets into the starting tutorial, where it says to airstomp down, you can press tab and quit to main menu. DONT WORRY YOU CAN STILL DO TUTORIAL AFTER, ITS AN OPTION. But quitting to main menu basically saves your settings (its what i feel) and then fully quit by clicking that quit button to be assured that the settings are fully saved. Because i learned that clicking the "low" settings then trying to alt+f4 to see if it saved, didnt work(obviously).
Basically in this order is what worked for me, Edit the Options in "Preferences" file, Open game and hope it fixes blackscreen, choose "Low" options, When it says to airstomp press "Tab" and quit to main menu, then quit game, Re-open game, Now options menu is there for you to edit for your system. I had to re-edit my options after it saved because the "low" options wasnt enough for this turd of a laptop so i had adjusted it to my own settings in the "Preferences" file.
Note: It personally took over freaking 30 god damn crashes before I got it working and im glad it works. I also want to point out that going back to the game, I learned that the training area is so unbareably laggy for my laptop to handle. But I did test out the lambaste/survival mode and it played out pretty dandy. Like I have choppy/laggy gameplay but I mean its something thats bareable. Later i'll test story mode but im beat from dealing with all of the struggle I had just gone through.
Note2: You wonder why I was determined on trying to play "We Shall Wake" on a cruddy laptop? because I knew it's suppost to be a game for higher end systems, but my friend had a bet for $100 that I couldnt get this laptop to play the game and haha I sure damn did get it to work.
Note 3: I call this laptop low end personally due to what im used to playing on. Its decent for how outdated its stuff is though haha. But yo heres my specs for it:
HP G42-475DX Notebook PC
4 Gb ram
[Processor]: AMD Phenom(tm) II N640 Dual-Core Processor 2.90 GHz
64-bit OS with Windows 7 (Home Premium)
[Display Adapter]: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series
Note 4: I apologize for the lack of grammar in my descriptions but I hope its understandable! And im sorry if this belongs to some other forum like bug report, I felt like this was more of a feedback about how a more type of outdated laptop would function on a game like this. If this needs to be placed onto another forum area ill be able to copy this over there and remove this here if its in the wrong area. Man, this was a long hell of a feedback .
